EMDR Therapy Session

What is EMDR Therapy?

EMDR therapy (eye movement desensitisation and reprocessing) is an effective method of psychotherapy that helps people recover from trauma and other distress.

Unlike other types of psychotherapy, you won’t do lots of talking in detail about your trauma in an EMDR session. Instead, EMDR therapy focusses on changing the thoughts, emotions and reaction you have to that trauma or distress. As a result, you can forge new associations with previously traumatic memories.

Who can benefit from EMDR treatment?

EMDR treatment helps both children and adults to overcome the effects of trauma or distress. As a result it is used to treat patients facing a wide range of challenges. This includes PTSD, Anxiety, Depression, Grief, and Phobias.

EMDR for Trauma

An EMDR therapy session can help you to access and reprocess traumatic memories. You may find talking about your trauma difficult, so EMDR is a good alternative to traditional Psychotherapy sessions.

Your brain already has the tools to recover from traumatic events. But you may find that images or memories of such events cause you to freeze or panic. An EMDR therapist can help you to reprocess those memories and create new associations. As a result, you will still remember the trauma, but your negative response will be resolved.

EMDR for PTSD

Eye movement desensitisation and reprocessing (EMDR) has been found to reduce the symptoms of post traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) in many patients. So, book a free 15 minute chat to see if it’s right for you.

EMDR for Anxiety

EMDR sessions for anxiety are increasingly common as patients now understand the benefits of this treatment. By learning more about how EMDR works and the theories behind its efficacy, you can decide whether EMDR is right for you. While EMDR treatment can be effective for some, those struggling with severe anxiety may want to combine EMDR within a broader spectrum of care.

EMDR for OCD

Obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD) has been successfully treated with EMDR therapy. However, it is a commonly misunderstood condition. People with OCD often have a history of trauma, so a combination of treatments can sometimes be useful to overcome the root causes.

EMDR for children

EMDR therapy is recognised by the World Health Organisation as an effective treatment for children following trauma. However, it’s not necessarily right for everyone. If you would like to understand more about EMDR sessions for children, book a free 15 minute chat today.

EMDR for phobias

EMDR is an effective treatment for trauma and therefore phobias too. Most phobias are caused by some sort of trauma in the past. As a result, people can develop irrational fears that stay with them for life. EMDR therapy has been shown to be effective when used as a treatment for phobias. What to expect during an EMDR therapy session

The principle of EMDR therapy is to process traumatic experiences that are causing problems and to insert new experiences to resolve them.

The client will be asked to focus on a specific event. Focussing their attention on a negative image, belief, emotion, and body feeling related to this event, and then to a positive alternative that would resolve the issue.

While the client focuses on the trauma, they are guided to begin side-to-side eye movements, sounds, or taps. Before being asked to notice what comes to mind after each set.

The client has full control to stop the therapy at any point. This process is repeated until the trauma becomes less traumatic.
