Being aware of Obsessive Compulsive Disorder – OCD

This month it’s OCD Awareness Week, which runs from Monday, 13th October to Sunday, 19th October 2014.  As a psychotherapist treating clients with OCD and a member of OCD-UK, I’m proud to support this important campaign to raise awareness of obsessive compulsive disorder.

Obsessive thoughts and compulsive behaviour are often difficult to deal with. People may, for example, have obsessive thoughts about being contaminated with germs or fear that they may have forgotten to lock the door or turn off the oven.  These thoughts and behaviours are sometimes misunderstood or trivialised in society.  They aren’t trivial – they are serious – and this type of compulsive behaviour can overtake lives, relationships and careers.

You may be aware that people with OCD, for example, may feel compelled to wash their hands, do things in a particular order or keep repeating actions a certain number of times.  Suffering from OCD means that these compulsive behaviours are repeated a vast number of times.  For example, people may wash their hands until they are red-raw, and, they just can’t stop washing their hands.

What isn’t often widely understood is that OCD is also a typical behaviour within anxiety and depression disorder. Depression and anxiety are the most common forms of mental distress in the UK.

Many people seek therapy to work through OCD and I’m pleased to say that there is light at the end of the tunnel for OCD sufferers.
